Yoga teacher training in New Zealand 2026: where to study

If you are considering yoga teacher training, the first thing to know is that the standard format is a 200-hour foundational programme over six to twelve months, costing between $4,500 and $7,500 in New Zealand. The 200-hour qualification lets you register with Yoga Alliance International (the main industry body) and teach commercially.

Beyond the 200-hour, 300-hour advanced trainings build on the foundation and qualify you to teach more advanced students and run your own 200-hour trainings.

The main yoga teacher trainings in Auckland are at Auckland Yoga Academy (the most traditional and rigorous), Sala Studio (the most contemporary), HIYOGA (best for hot yoga teaching), and Sweat Yoga. Around New Zealand, additional options run out of Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown and Raglan.

What to look for in a teacher training

Yoga Alliance International registration. The programme should be registered with YAI (yogaallianceinternationalregistry.com). This is the credential most studios will ask about.

A clear lineage. Good trainings come from a clear yoga tradition (Ashtanga, Iyengar, Hatha, Vinyasa, Bikram). Eclectic trainings without a lineage tend to produce eclectic teachers without a foundation.

Senior teachers. The lead teacher should have at least ten years of personal practice and five years of teaching. Look at their bio carefully.

Reasonable contact hours. A 200-hour programme should include 100+ hours of in-person contact time with a teacher. Online-only programmes are cheaper but produce weaker teachers.

A practicum component. You should be teaching real students, supervised, before you finish.

Anatomy and physiology content. At least 20 hours of anatomy taught by someone qualified. This is non-negotiable for safe teaching.

Philosophy and ethics content. Most reputable programmes include 20 to 30 hours of philosophy (the Yoga Sutras, the Bhagavad Gita) and ethics. This is what separates yoga teaching from gym instruction.

Auckland yoga teacher trainings

Auckland Yoga Academy, Federal Street

The most traditional and rigorous teacher training in New Zealand. The YA800 programme combines a 200-hour Yoga Alliance qualification with the Academy’s own 400-hour internal qualification, taking you to YA800/RYT500 over 12 months. Lineage is Sri K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Vinyasa. Directors Jude Hynes and Peter Nilsson are senior teachers with decades of experience. The intermediate course extends to YA800/RYT500. This is the programme for serious practitioners who want depth.

Sala Studio, Ponsonby

The 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training is one of the most respected contemporary programmes in New Zealand. Next iteration April 2027, led by founder Sarah Lindsay with support from Otto Prodan and Monica Cronin. The lineage is contemporary vinyasa with strong anatomy and philosophy components.

HIYOGA, Queen Street

The 300-hour Advanced Yoga Teacher Training is the main option. Founder Rebeckh is a Yoga Alliance designated Master Yoga Teacher. The training qualifies graduates to teach the 84-asana Hot Yoga sequence and to run their own 200-hour trainings. Combine with a 200-hour foundation for full qualification.

Sweat Yoga, Newmarket

Hot yoga and Hot HIIT Pilates trainings of varying lengths. Founder Bruce Simons completed his Bikram Teacher Training in 2009 and added Contemporary Yoga Studies in 2015. Strong for people wanting to teach hot yoga specifically.

Around New Zealand

Wellington

Several established programmes including Yoga Wellington’s 200-hour training. Strong yin and restorative specialism in the capital.

Christchurch

The Yoga Sanctuary runs 200-hour and 300-hour trainings. Recovery from the earthquakes has built a resilient and grounded yoga community.

Queenstown

Yoga Bhoga and other studios run 200-hour intensives in stunning lakeside settings. Tend to be more expensive but the location is part of the offer.

Raglan and the Coromandel

Multiple retreat-based 200-hour intensives. The short-format intensives (three to four weeks residential) work well for people with the time to commit fully. Quality varies; check the senior teacher’s bio carefully.

Cost and time commitment

A 200-hour training typically costs $4,500 to $7,500 in NZ. The format varies:

  • Modular: weekend modules over six to twelve months. Easier to integrate with work.
  • Intensive: three to four weeks full-time residential. More immersive but harder to take leave for.
  • Hybrid: online theory plus in-person practical modules. Cheapest but lowest quality.

Add another $5,000 to $7,000 for the 300-hour advanced qualification.

Should you do teacher training?

The honest answer for most people: only do teacher training if you want to teach, or if you want to deepen your own practice and accept the financial cost. About 60 percent of people who complete 200-hour trainings never teach commercially. The training is still valuable for personal practice and for the rigor of learning anatomy and philosophy. But if you are doing it to monetise yoga, the return on investment is modest. Most studio teachers earn $30 to $50 per class.

If you do want to teach, do not skip the practicum and the senior-teacher mentorship phase. The first hundred classes you teach are where the actual teaching skill is built.

FAQ

How much does yoga teacher training cost in New Zealand? A 200-hour foundational training costs between $4,500 and $7,500. A 300-hour advanced training adds another $5,000 to $7,000.

Where can I do a 200-hour yoga teacher training in Auckland? Auckland Yoga Academy on Federal Street (the most traditional and rigorous, lineage Ashtanga), Sala Studio in Ponsonby (contemporary vinyasa, next iteration April 2027), and others.

Do I need to be advanced to do teacher training? No, but you should have at least 12 months of regular practice (two to three classes per week) before starting. The training will not turn you into an advanced practitioner; it teaches you to teach what you already know.
