Sweat Yoga is the studio I keep my membership at because the practice is unambiguous. Twelve Morgan Street, Newmarket, purpose-built, properly hot, with a teaching team that has been with the studio long enough to feel like family. Bruce Simons opened it in 2016 after his own Bikram Teacher Training in 2009 and a contemporary yoga two-hundred-hour certificate in 2015; the studio he built is the one he wanted to practise at himself. It shows in the small things — the water pressure in the showers, the four women’s and three men’s stalls, the way the door locks five minutes before class starts so the room can settle.

The owner

Bruce Simons is the founder, owner and studio manager — listed on Sweat’s own site under the somewhat understated title. He is also a Bikram convert who is open about it on the studio’s About page, and the way he runs the room reflects that: structured, hot, no music in the traditional Hot Yoga, no fuss about it. Sweat Yoga Limited has been operating since September 2016. The studio runs as a tight five- or six-teacher team rather than a sprawling chain, which is one of the reasons regulars stay.

The room

A single purpose-built heated studio, infrared heating, with three different working temperatures depending on the class. Capacity is not published anywhere I can find, but reviewers report classes can pack tightly — “a few inches between participants” is a phrase that comes up. The amenities punch above the studio’s size: four women’s and three men’s showers (water pressure is genuinely praised), spacious lockers, mat hire at three dollars, towel hire at three dollars. The website calls it a small Newmarket studio. In practice it is exactly that, which is part of the appeal.

The classes

Four formats, three temperatures:

  • Hot Yoga — based on the classic 26+2 sequence, taught in 60 or 90 minute versions, room at roughly thirty-eight degrees. Sweat describes it as Hatha-style traditionally known as Bikram; that is honest about the format being Bikram-derived without claiming a licensed franchise.
  • Power Vinyasa — a cosier thirty-two degrees, music-led flow with breath
  • Yin — long-hold passive postures, warm rather than hot
  • Hot HIIT Pilates — high-intensity tabata-style intervals at thirty-two to thirty-five degrees, with music

The teachers

Beyond Bruce, the named roster includes Onny Faleafa (former New Zealand representative footballer, teaching at Sweat since 2014); Vanessa Heath (twenty-five-plus years of teaching, Baptiste-trained, Reiki, prenatal and postnatal, Yin); Margot Watson (hot yoga and pilates, core focus); and Sarah Jehan, who leads Hot Pilates and brought a tabata structure that the studio has built around (ex-biology teacher; the rigour shows). Reviewers also name Emily, Raewyn Clark and Acacia repeatedly — these may be current or former, I have not been able to confirm.

Pricing

The two pricing tiers most students use:

  • Two-week intro: $40 for fourteen days unlimited Hot Yoga and Pilates
  • Unlimited monthly: $160 a month

Drop-in single-class, class-pack and concession rates are not surfaced on the public pricing page; the studio is intentionally pushing newcomers onto the $40 intro and regulars onto the $160 monthly. On ClassPass. Mat and towel hire at three dollars each.

What people say

ClassPass shows 4.9 out of 5 across more than thirty thousand ratings; Google sits at 4.7 across roughly seventy to eighty reviews. Recurring themes: second home, knowledgeable teachers, clean modern facility, extremely challenging. Bruce gets singled out by name; Emily and Acacia (likely past teachers) come up in older reviews. Denizen coverage frames Sweat as the heat-and-HIIT specialist “loved city-wide” — and that is genuinely how it positions against HIYOGA’s value play and Eastwest Yoga’s traditional 26+2.

Honest criticisms

From Google and ClassPass feedback. The strict 5-minutes-before-class door lock is the loudest complaint, with multiple reviewers describing being refused entry and losing the credit after being slightly late. Reception tone reads cold to some first-timers; words like ‘rude’ and ‘snobbish’ come up. Peak hot and yin classes pack tight, with mats close enough that people bump in transitions. The phone-free, silence policy in the room is great for regulars but can feel sharp for newcomers. The six-hour late-cancel window and $20 no-show fee on unlimited memberships also draws occasional grumbles. The eight-space carpark above the studio fills fast.

Practical

There are eight free parking spaces above the studio, accessed via the ramp at 100 Carlton Gore Road (code 1151GREEN, fifteen-minute vacate rule after class — the studio is firm about this). Metered street parking on Morgan, Carlton Gore and George Streets. Newmarket train station is roughly six hundred to nine hundred metres up Khyber Pass on foot. Free ninety-minute Domain parking is available off Football Road if you have the legs for it.

Who it’s for

Committed sweat-seekers; ex-CrossFitters trying yoga; Bikram loyalists who want a non-franchise studio teaching the 26+2 sequence; Newmarket office workers chasing six a.m. or six p.m. classes; anyone who would rather be challenged hard than soothed.

It is not the right studio for late arrivers, anyone heat-sensitive, beginners wanting slow alignment classes, those who want a hush-toned boutique vibe, or people who prefer their pricing fully transparent on the website. The intro is $40 and worth the punt before you commit.
