Auckland Yoga Academy.

If you want traditional Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga in the Pattabhi Jois lineage, there is one place in Auckland to do it properly, and it has been at 190 Federal Street since the year 2000. Auckland Yoga Academy is the city’s only studio with a daily Mysore programme, run by two of the most experienced teachers in the country — Peter Nilsson and Jude Hynes — who have between them more than seventy years of teaching, sixteen Mysore study trips to India, and direct authorisation from Sri K. Pattabhi Jois to teach the lineage.

It is also one of the oldest yoga schools in Australasia, founded in 1991, three years after Peter took his first Iyengar class in Wellington at the age of 30 to recover from a back injury he picked up at 23. The studio’s lineage runs straight back: Patanjali → T. Krishnamacharya → Pattabhi Jois → Peter and Jude. When you walk in, that history is not a marketing line. It is the room.

The space

Two large practice rooms with wide tawa wood floors, dim lighting that suits a 6 am Mysore start, a dedicated meditation area, two showers, two toilets, a small yoga shop near reception and a changing room that has clearly been used by serious practitioners for two decades. There is bicycle storage in the foyer. The studio sits thirty seconds from the Nelson Street Cycleway. The atmosphere is unrenovated nineties in the best sense: studied, focused, quiet. People come here to practise.

The Academy does not market with photography. There are no glossy shots of the room online and there will not be any here. Visit at 6 am to see why.

The teachers

Peter Nilsson is the founder and director, now seventy-seven. Civil engineer at Wellington City Council before yoga; Junior Introductory Iyengar certificate in 1989; first trip to BKS Iyengar in Pune in 1992; first trip to Mysore in 1993; eighteen subsequent India trips of two months at a time. He names Pattabhi Jois as his guru.

Jude Hynes is the training director, practising since 1988, teaching since 1991, ERYT-500 with Yoga Alliance, authorised by Pattabhi Jois to teach Ashtanga Vinyasa, sixteen Mysore trips since 1996. Before yoga she was a senior tutor and course coordinator at an NZQA early-childhood teacher-training institution, which explains the academic backbone of the school. Pattabhi Jois personally married Peter and Jude in 2002.

Senior teachers on the current roster include Mei Cheng, Hui Zhang (YA800), Ben Seymour, Barry McDonald, Iris Sun (YA800), Ellie Gray (RYT500) and Varun, who runs the Level 1 and Level 2 Ashtanga beginner classes.

The classes

The signature programme is daily Mysore Ashtanga: self-paced, not talked-through, students arriving any time up to one hour before close, ten to fifteen minutes of relaxation to finish. To join Mysore you must first complete at least four Ashtanga Beginner classes — the $49 intro pack covers the beginner classes but not Mysore.

Beyond Mysore, the timetable runs Ashtanga Beginner in both one-hour and ninety-minute formats (talked-through, simplified primary series, children aged 10–15 attend free with an adult), Hatha Yoga themed by family (standing, sitting, backbends, abdominals, inversions, relaxation), Pranayama, Meditation and Mindfulness, Prenatal, and a regular Kirtan / chanting session for those who want to sit in mantra rather than asana.

Live class times sit behind the studio’s Mindbody booking, so check there before turning up.

Pricing

The pricing is honest and unfussy.

  • Intro pack: $49 for one month unlimited Beginner classes (excludes Mysore and Hatha Intermediate)
  • Drop-in: $30 for classes up to one hour; $35 for one-and-a-half to two-hour classes
  • 10-class packs (12-month validity): $199 (1 hr general) · $172 (student / community) · $229 (longer general) · $203 (longer student / community)
  • Monthly unlimited: $199
  • 3-month direct-debit unlimited: $159 per month, three-month minimum, pausable one to two months a year with a week’s notice
  • Cash or Eftpos at reception

There is no annual pass advertised. Not on ClassPass — the school runs its own booking through Mindbody.

Teacher training

Yoga Alliance accredited at RYS 200 and RYS 300 levels. Jude is the lead trainer; Peter is also a lead. Three pathways: a six-month foundational training, a twelve-month intermediate, and a twelve-month Level One Advanced Apprenticeship. The format is part-time and modular, with trainees teaching real, paying, mixed-level students as part of the programme. This is not a six-week residential immersive; it is closer to a vocational craft apprenticeship.

What students consistently say

The same words come up: authentic, honest, traditional, welcoming, knowledgeable, focused. One regular’s Facebook line lands the studio’s character: “I found my place here. Authentic, honest, powerful and welcoming.” Reviews repeatedly mention the quality of the cueing, the depth of the teachers’ knowledge, and the noise-free atmosphere conducive to concentration. The studio’s own contact page is candid about one thing students raise: “parking is at a premium.”

Honest criticisms

A few things come up in Google and Mindbody reviews. New drop-ins often get pushed firmly toward the $49 beginner intro rather than the class they wanted, which reads as gatekeeping. The intro doesn’t include the daily Mysore programme, which is the studio’s signature offering, so you can’t fully sample it on the deal. The format itself is traditional Ashtanga: early starts, the fixed Primary Series, repetition over variety. Parking on Federal Street is a known hunt; the studio’s own contact page calls it ‘at a premium’. Not on ClassPass.

Who it’s for

Anyone drawn to traditional Ashtanga who wants a daily Mysore home; teacher-training candidates seeking lineage-authorised instruction; students who value depth and authority over novelty; CBD workers and residents who want a six-a.m. practice before work; anyone who would rather understand one thing well than try seven things in a year.

It is not the right place for ClassPass hoppers, casual gym-style drop-ins, anyone who wants different teachers each week, or anyone uncomfortable with the guru-lineage framing.

What to expect on your first visit

Arrive ten minutes early. Sign in at reception. Leave shoes near the door. Mats and props are provided. Wear what you would for any yoga class. The classes start on time. The Mysore room is silent.
