The Yoga Ground turned ten years old in January 2026 and it remains the studio I send absolute beginners to without hesitation. Up the stairs at 56 Surrey Crescent in Grey Lynn, behind the Isaac apartments and down a small side alley — a high-stud bamboo-floored room with so much natural light it feels like a different building from the one you walked up into. Owner Kara Sweney founded it in 2016 after seventeen years in sports marketing and PR. The six-week Introduction To Yoga course she has built here, at $169 for six 70- to 75-minute sessions, is genuinely the best entry point to yoga in this city.

The owner

Kara Sweney spent seventeen years in sports marketing before opening The Yoga Ground in January 2016. Her training is unusually broad: a Power Living two-hundred-hour, an Ashram Yoga one-hundred-hour, Yin Yoga, Traditional Chinese Meridian theory, Qi Gong, Reiki — plus a psychology degree underneath all of it. She runs the studio as something closer to a community than a chain. Reviews praise both her own teaching and the way she has built the team around her.

The space

Level 1, up a small flight of stairs from a side alley off Surrey Crescent. High-stud bamboo floors, abundant natural light, city views from one window. The studio describes itself as “an urban sanctuary” and that is accurate. Heat pumps keep it comfortable through Auckland winter. Mats and props are provided. The room is the right size — not so small that you bump elbows, not so big that you lose the teacher’s eye.

The six-week Introduction To Yoga

The signature offering, and the one I keep recommending to friends new to the practice:

  • $169 for six 70- to 75-minute sessions, weekly
  • Asana fundamentals, pranayama, the breath-posture-mind link, sequencing for home practice, a small dose of yogic philosophy
  • Mat and prop rental included
  • Plus two free drop-in classes during the course window
  • Multi-pass discounts after the course

The course is currently led by Dani Affleck (the same teacher who heads Yoga Aotearoa) — trauma-informed, with a mental-health focus. The page says it is “run by Kara and her team,” and the team runs deep.

The classes

The full menu, all confirmed on the studio site:

  • Vinyasa — flow with sun salutations, all levels
  • Vinyasa Basics — slower entry into the flow style
  • Yin — five-minute-plus passive holds, connective tissue and lower body
  • YG Strength — not a yoga class in the traditional sense: hand weights, resistance bands, blocks, bodyweight, controlled reps, time under tension (taught by Ashlee Lala — review favourite)
  • Hatha — steady, mindful pace, beginner-friendly
  • Restorative — prop-supported, sustained holds
  • Yoga Basics, Yin Yang, Hansa Flow, Somatic Flow, Yin + Yoga Nidra

Twenty-five-plus classes a week, age fourteen and up.

The teachers

A roster of about fourteen, which is generous for a single-studio operation:

  • Liana Yew — ex-professional dancer, with the studio since 2013, the longest-standing teacher
  • Clare Roberts — Occupational Therapist, yoga therapy specialist
  • Dani Affleck — trauma-informed, heads the Introduction To Yoga course
  • Ashlee Lala — leads Vinyasa, Power, Yin and YG Strength; review favourite (“Ashley’s classes are amazing”)
  • Nikki Ralston — former Urban Ashram owner, has taught the Warriors and the Blues, Wanderlust regular
  • Kerry-Lyn Fletcher — iRest practitioner
  • Sarah Ferguson — Physics PhD, 5,000-plus teaching hours, Rodney Yee lineage
  • Plus Katie Vinson, Kat Purvis, Jess Atkinson, Jeremy Wilson (ZenThai), Joti Savitri Kaur (Kundalini), Sarah McFadden and Racquel (named in ClassPass reviews for a calming voice)

What people say

ClassPass shows 4.9 stars across more than five thousand ratings; aggregated Google reviews land at 91 per cent five-star across 271 reviews; Facebook recommends at 98 per cent. The phrases recur: welcoming, friendly, light-filled, beautiful space, one of the longest running, classes for everyone, unrushed, teachers consistently described as accommodating and encouraging. Substantive negative reviews are genuinely scarce — flag this as a gap rather than a guarantee.

Honest criticisms

Friction points that recur in reviews. The studio is upstairs with no lift, and the side-alley entrance behind the Isaac apartments is genuinely hard to find on a first visit. There’s no on-site parking; you walk in from Surrey Crescent or the Montessori carpark after 4:15 pm. The Mindbody booking system auto-charges a $10 fee for cancellations inside three hours of class. Drop-in pricing isn’t displayed on the public homepage; you have to dig. Across the 14-strong teaching roster the pace varies noticeably between instructors. No hot room, and YG Strength is weights-based rather than traditional yoga, which can confuse anyone booking by name alone.

Practical

Free street parking on Surrey Crescent is the local secret — usually available, no meters. Surrey Crescent is on the Inner Link bus route. The studio is a ten- to twelve-minute walk from Ponsonby Road and Three Lamps if you would rather come in on foot.

Who it’s for

Absolute beginners — the six-week course is the clear front door, and the gentlest, most thoughtful on-ramp into a practice in Auckland. Grey Lynn, Ponsonby and Westmere locals. Returners-after-a-break who want a small community studio rather than a chain. Anyone who would rather practise with a teacher who knows their name.

It is less the right room for hot-yoga seekers, heavy-sweat HIIT-style flow chasers, or anyone wanting late-night drop-ins; the timetable runs early morning through mid-evening.
